Koru Club Supported Learning Programme
At the end of 2020 WestREAP and the West Coast Disability Resource Service (a contract held by WestREAP) started working with members of the local Westland community in Hokitika to set up and run a Learning Support programme for students with disabilities leaving Westland High School.
At the start of Term 1 2021 WestREAP started Koru Club. This runs every Monday 10am to 1pm during school term time at the All Saints Church Lounge on Stafford Street, opposite Cass Square. The fee is $20 per term.
Koru Club is facilitated by Linda Brake and volunteers. Linda is also a Community Support worked for CCS so is well experienced at running these groups and programmes. She brings a long history of experience in similar roles to WestREAP and the Koru Club programme.
The group has quickly grown with an average of 18 - 20 people turning up each week to enjoy social interaction, projects, crafts, art, cooking, life skills and much more. We ran a raffle to fund resources recently which raised around $600 and also helped raise the issue of disability in our communities and the existence of Koru Club. We have also been successful in securing around $4000 from the Sutherland Self Help Trust for resources. We would like to acknowledge the Trust's support for Koru Club in Hokitika.
